The Life of Music


Sam DuBose is a sophomore musician at Lab. He played a wide range of instruments across many genres.



Sam is a talented piano player. He started playing the piano when he was six years old. At school he plays piano for the jazz band. Sam remarks "piano is my roots per say, in the beginning I hated it but it sparked my interest with music. It is still my favorite instrument to play."


 Sam is not just limited to piano, he plays a diverse selection of instruments.




Sam often does not play alone. He jams with his best friend, Michael Harper, all the time. They started a band and are planing of recording and releasing an album. Sam is dedicated to making his band better than average. According to Michael "Sam is a control freak about his music, he does not trust others." They fight about their music all the time, but it makes is better.

Music is a part of Sam, he says "music is what gets me through the day" Sam dreams of making is big, and he works for that dream all the time.

Otto Brown Student or Administrator?  Otto Brown is a senior U-High student. He has served on student council for two years, he is a member of the disciplinary review board and the assembly committee. He is a part of the handbook committee and was a member of the Independent Schools Association of the Central States (ISACS) Committee. He is an active member of the student body which has brought him a reputation. Through his experience he has built connections with the faculty and administration of the school. he says they have personal relationships but "they are here to do a job and so am I." He is not afraid to bring up hard topics with teachers or admins because he talks to them so much. he says "its easier to talk about something hard when its your 140th time talking to them instead of your first."  But how close he is to the faculty and administration can alienate him from his fellow student. Graffiti: Street Art or Vandalism?

Graffiti  Street Art or Vandalism? While driving around Chicago, it is not hard to find murals on the walls of buildings and bridges. Many are beautiful and took a lot of time to create. They serve as a way to give some color to a neighborhood. While driving past some of my favorite murals, the Hubbard Street Murals, I began to notice the tagging and defacement on the walls.            Some have even been painted over to cover up graffiti. Another Mural in Hyde Park was also defaced. Many people think of this kind of this when they hear about grafitii artists. They see the sketchy allys and industrial buildings.   But Graffiti can be beautiful and give color to communities just like the commissioned murals.          .  Going out and looking of Graffiti like that made me see the skill and beauty in everyday Graffiti.         Chicago has strict policy on graffiti and paints over
